Sign 1 — Nose-dive under hard braking
On a healthy car, when you brake hard from 60 km/h, the front of the car dips slightly and settles. On a car with worn front shocks, the nose plunges — and bobs once or twice before settling. This is not just a comfort issue: extra weight transfer onto the front tyres reduces rear grip, and braking distances grow noticeably (often 1–3 metres longer at city speeds).
Front shocks on European sedans and SUVs in Bangalore typically reach this state between 80–1,20,000 km. Hatchbacks and city cars: 60–90,000 km. SUVs that carry full loads: earlier.
Sign 2 — Knocking or clunking over speed-breakers
A muted "thud" over a speed-breaker is normal. A metallic "clunk" or "knock" is not — it usually means either the shock has lost gas charge and the piston is hitting its end-stop, or the strut top-mount bearing is shot, or a stabilizer link / lower-arm ball joint has play. The fix depends on which one.
Quick test: with the car parked, push down hard on a corner of the bonnet. The corner should drop, return up, and stop. If it bounces twice or more, the shock on that corner is at the end of its life.
Sign 3 — Oil film or wet streak on the shock body
Open the bonnet, look down at the top of the front strut. Look at the rear shock from under the boot. A light dust film is normal. A wet, oily streak running down the shock body means the seal has failed and the shock has lost some of its damping fluid. Once this starts, the shock will get worse fast — replace in pairs (both fronts together or both rears together) so damping is balanced left-to-right.
Sign 4 — Body roll in corners and rear squat under acceleration
If the car leans more than it used to in fast corners, or the rear visibly squats when you accelerate hard from a standstill, the shocks are losing the ability to control the springs. On rear-wheel-drive cars (BMW, Mercedes), rear-shock wear shows up under acceleration first. On front-wheel-drive cars, front-shock wear shows up under braking first.
Sign 5 — Uneven tyre wear (cupping or scalloping)
Worn shocks let the tyre bounce on the road instead of staying planted, which scallops the tread (you will see and feel a wavy pattern around the tyre circumference). Once cupping starts, even new shocks will not fix the worn tyre — you typically need both: replace the shocks AND budget for a tyre rotation or replacement.
Sign 6 — Longer braking distance, especially in the wet
Studies (and the manufacturer's own data on premium cars) consistently show worn shocks can add 1–3 metres to a panic stop from 80 km/h. The reason is mechanical: a bouncing tyre spends part of each second slightly off the road, where it cannot generate braking force. ABS does its best, but it cannot fix a tyre that is in the air.
Sign 7 — Steering that wanders or feels vague
When the front shocks are tired AND the front lower-arm bushes / tie-rod ends have play, the steering loses its precise on-centre feel. The car drifts slightly side-to-side on a straight road and you find yourself making small corrections constantly. On Indian roads (where all three wear together), this is a common combined symptom and the fix is usually shocks + lower arms + tie-rod ends as a single job.
