    Audi A4 / A6 / Q5 / Q7 / A8 Suspension — Buyer Guide

    A4 (B8, B9), A6 (C7, C8), Q5 (8R, FY) and Q7 (4M) span steel suspension and adaptive air suspension. The Q7 / A6 Allroad / A8 air-suspension specifically is one of the most-asked-about repairs we handle in Bangalore.

    TL;DR

Steel: Sachs OE shocks + Lemförder arms is the standard repair, identical to VW / Skoda playbook. Air: OES (Arnott, Bilstein, ContiTech) air-springs are a real-money alternative to Audi Genuine.

    Steel suspension — wear pattern

On Bangalore roads, A4 and Q5 in particular show a consistent pattern:

    • Front lower-arm and upper-arm bushes (Audi runs a 4-link or 5-link front) — 70–1,00,000 km.
    • Rear arm bushes — 80–1,20,000 km.
    • Front struts (Sachs OE) — 90–1,30,000 km.
    • Rear shocks — 1,00,000+ km.
    • Stabilizer end-links — 60–90,000 km.

OE supplier and OES alternatives — Audi steel

Sachs (ZF) is the OE shock; Lemförder (ZF) is the OE for the multi-link front and rear arms. Audi A4 / A6 use a multi-link aluminium front suspension with a high number of individual arms — most are individually serviceable (you can replace a single upper or lower arm, you do not have to do the lot). For the popular S4 / S5 / RS3 / RS5 / RSQ3 owners, Bilstein B6 / B8 is the standard upgrade path.

Q7 / A6 / A8 air suspension — what fails and what to budget for

Q7 (4M), A6 Allroad, A7, A8 and S/RS variants on adaptive air-suspension share the same wear pattern as Mercedes Airmatic — and the same parts categories.

    • Front or rear air-spring leak — car sags overnight on one corner. Most common Q7 air-suspension failure on Bangalore Q7s past 80,000 km.
    • Compressor (Wabco / AMK) failure — car will not raise. Usually downstream of a slow-leaking air spring.
    • Valve block leak — slower, intermittent ride-height issues.
    • Ride-height sensor — error codes; rare but does happen.

OE vs OES vs remanufactured — Audi air suspension

Three sourcing paths, same as Mercedes / BMW air:

    • Audi Genuine — most expensive, full new strut.
    • OES new — Arnott, Bilstein, ContiTech (the OE bellow supplier).
    • Remanufactured (Arnott-style) — new bellow on a rebuilt housing, real warranty, 50%+ saving on older cars.

    Indicative price bands — Audi

    Indicative; confirm with VIN.

    • Pair of front struts steel (Sachs OES, A4): ₹22,000–₹38,000.
    • Pair of rear shocks steel (Sachs OES, A4 / A6): ₹14,000–₹26,000.
    • Front upper arm (Lemförder, per side): ₹4,500–₹10,000.
    • Front lower arm complete (Lemförder, per side): ₹8,000–₹18,000.
    • Stabilizer end-link (per side): ₹1,500–₹3,200.
    • Q7 air-spring strut — Audi Genuine ₹1,30,000–₹2,20,000/side; OES new ₹85,000–₹1,40,000; remanufactured ₹50,000–₹85,000.
    • Q7 air-suspension compressor — Audi Genuine ₹95,000–₹1,50,000; OES (Wabco / AMK) ₹55,000–₹95,000.
    • Bilstein B6 strut pair (S4 / S5, non-Magnetic Ride): ₹55,000–₹95,000.

    Pitfalls on Audi suspension

    What we see:

    • On Q7 air-suspension, owners often pay for one new air spring and the same corner sags again 6 months later — because the compressor was already weak. Honest diagnosis matters here.
    • Multi-link front suspension on A4 / A6 — non-OE arms with the wrong bush durometer ruin the steering feel. Lemförder, TRW or Audi Genuine only.
    • Magnetic Ride / Adaptive Damping (S4, RS3, RSQ3) dampers cannot be cross-referenced to non-adaptive parts — VIN check is mandatory.
